Continually making engines better and also cleaner is an important goal of the automobile industry. The requirements placed on today’s vehicles by policymakers and consumers are tremendous. Future generations of vehicles depend on modern emission control systems and hybrid technologies, while electromobility is becoming a key technology for the cars of tomorrow.
Meeting these major challenges will require sophisticated technology. Controlling the processes plays a significant role here, as does precise data measurement. Precision is required even under difficult conditions, such as high temperature variations, harsh environments and severe mechanical stress.
Platinum sensors guarantee the precision and reliability you need for your applications. With their help, you achieve precise and constant measurement data with little drift even over long periods and across the particularly broad measuring range from –40°C to 1050°C. Outstanding chemical and mechanical stability and resistance to moisture, climate, and other environmental factors make measurements reproducible over many tens of thousands of cycles, thereby ensuring the necessary safety in continuous operation. Our products are constantly optimized to meet your needs and are manufactured in dialogue with you.
Because of this unique combination, we are your first choice for the development of reliable and innovative solutions. We work with you to find the best solution for your needs, and we support you from the idea to design to technical support in series production.
Treatment of exhaust gases
A catalytic converter is an emissions control device that converts toxic gases and pollutants in exhaust gas to less toxic pollutants by catalyzing a redox reaction (an oxidation and a reduction reaction). Catalytic converters are used with internal combustion engines fueled by either petrol (gasoline) or diesel—including lean-burn engines as well as kerosene heaters and stoves.
Various items of temperature information are needed in order to produce the optimum exhaust treatment, principally with diesel vehicles. For this application Heraeus Sensor Technology has developed special probes which cover the complete temperature range up to 1000°C.
In addition to these escape measurements, high temperature sensors are also used for component protection (overheating protection).
Temperature sensor design
The high-temperature measuring elements are available in differing lengths for temperatures of up to 1050°C , value that is seldom required in diesel technology where temperatures of up to 750°C are customary.
The two elements are the 24 mm long type HA 2421 and the 4 mm long type HA 421. The longer version is suitable for open installation on account of its very short response time, while the short version is a very robust model intended for installation in a closed case.
