Catalytic converter

A catalytic converter is an emissions control device that converts toxic gases and pollutants in exhaust gas to less toxic pollutants by catalyzing a redox reaction (an oxidation and a reduction reaction). Catalytic converters are used with internal combustion engines fueled by either petrol (gasoline) or diesel—including lean-burn engines as well as kerosene heaters and stoves.

Various items of temperature information are needed in order to produce the optimum exhaust treatment, principally with diesel vehicles. For this application Heraeus Sensor Technology has developed special probes which cover the complete temperature range up to 1000°C.

In addition to these escape measurements, high temperature sensors are also used for component protection (overheating protection).

The high-temperature measuring elements are available in differing lengths for temperatures of up to 1050°C , value that is seldom required in diesel technology where temperatures of up to 750°C are customary.

The two elements are the 24 mm long type HA 2421 and the 4 mm long type HA 421. The longer version is suitable for open installation on account of its very short response time, while the short version is a very robust model intended for  installation in a closed case.
